The origins of ancient music and the milestones in music history,
which form its theoretical framework, can be traced back to
civilizations around the Mediterranean, particularly through the literature left by pioneering scholars.
From the establishment of musical scales, such as the influential tetrachord, to the philosophical insights of ancient Greek thinkers,
music has transcended mere entertainment.
It held a revered place in education, offering a path for personal reflection and guiding individuals on their life’s journey.
Ancient Greek philosophers systematically theorized music’s profound influence on the human mind and soul, viewing it not merely as an art form but as an essential component of education.
They regarded music as both a conduit for personal reflection
and a guiding force in life—a bridge between sound and existence
that enables introspection and shapes one’s path.
Greek and Roman mythology has been sublimated and reinterpreted
by many artists as the flower of the muses.
This rich tradition has been studied and developed into practical methodologies in the holistic arts and humanities, leaving behind
a great cultural heritage that offers advice and inspiration.
During the ancient Greek era, hymns dedicated to Apollo, the god of music, prophecy, and healing, were engraved on the walls of the Delphic Temple.
These hymns attest to the significance of music within Greek culture.
Remarkably, some of the oldest well-preserved musical notations can be found in the ‘Seikilos Epitaph,’ an epitaph featuring characters and symbols that represent sheet music, providing valuable insights into the musical traditions of that time.
The invention of the solmization system by Guido of Arezzo, known as solfège, was a significant contribution to the evolution of music theory. By applying solfège to sacred chants written in Latin, the understanding of musical notation and music theory deepened.
This system, along with the interplay between human emotions and trained skills, has facilitated the development of these concepts,
offering deeper insight into the art of music and inspiring a journey of endless exploration and study.
When I was young, the scores of Gregorian chant resonated with me, evoking a visual beauty that inspired my auditory imagination.
In my book, "Gift," I delve into the vibrations of my mind inspired by art and historical relics I encountered long ago. It draws upon one of the theoretical classes I taught in college, which focused on the structural characteristics in various disciplines like architecture, painting, history, and philosophy, all of which have partial connections to music.
The book comprises a short story that blends characters from ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology with real figures from history, infused with imaginative elements.
Visual perception can transform into auditory perception, and auditory perception can manifest as visual perception—just as one can experience a visual sense through auditory stimuli or perceive the beauty of a flower solely through its fragrance with closed eyes.
I hope that, as you paint the scenes described in this book onto the canvas of your imagination and journey through its pages, the lingering traces in your mind, when you eventually close the book, will remain as an afterglow.
May you view the fragrance of the flowers in visual hues, keeping the essence of this experience alive within you.
